At a presentation held for the President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Sunday was raised the issue of expanding the capacity of the power supply system, the presidential press service said in a statement.

On January 25, a technical failure occurred in the regional energy system, affecting all power plants in the country and creating an emergency. The power outage also affected southern Kazakhstan and all of Kyrgyzstan.

The press service of the President of Uzbekistan said that "many reasons" led to this situation.

“The unified energy system is not completely looped by 220-500 kV main lines. In the main part of the North-Western and South-Western nodes there are no 500 kV networks. Some highways pass through the territory of neighboring states,” the report says.

To ensure the stability of the energy system in the country, it is planned to create a single ring system through the construction of 500-750 kV networks. By 2026, it is planned to increase the total generating capacity to 27.4 thousand MW and annual output to 110 billion kWh. Then all regions of the country will be reliably connected by 500-750 kV networks with the creation of a single system, the statement added.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev pointed to the need to reform the power industry system and develop cooperation with neighboring countries. He instructed to prepare a draft resolution on increasing power generating capacity and automating power supply.

The main goal is reportedly to increase the stability of the energy system and uninterrupted supply of electricity to the population.

A government commission chaired by the prime minister, formed on the instruction of the president, continues to investigate the causes of the accident.

The commission has not yet named the reasons for the failure, however, a representative of the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan reported that the malfunction occurred at the Syrdarya TPP: “A large capacity of 1600 MW was lost. As a result of [activation] of emergency protection, generating facilities throughout the republic were separated from the system.”

The Kazakh operator of electrical networks KEGOC also noted that the cause of the failure in the energy system of the region was a malfunction at the Syrdarya TPP.
