The 50% reduction in the supply of electricity from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan is due to the repair works at one of the 220 kV two power transmission lines (Naibobod-1), the Ministry of Energy said in a statement.
Afghanistan's national electricity company Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) said on December 29 that technical problems in Uzbekistan cut power supplies to Afghanistan in half, leaving 15 provinces, including Kabul, facing power outages by the end of the day.
“As a result of this problem, by the end of today, 15 provinces on the route of transmission line, including Kabul, will face the problem of electricity shortages,” the energy company's website said in a statement.
"The repair of the line has been completed and, thus, the previous volume of supplies has also been resumed," the Ministry of Energy added.
In October, it was reported that the Afghan energy company owed more than $ 51 million for electricity to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Iran. However, according to the Deputy Prime Minister Sardor Umurzakov, the caretaker government of Afghanistan has pledged to fully pay off its electricity debt, and Uzbekistan “for one hour” did not stop supplying electricity to Kabul.
