The nuclear power plant, planned to be built in Jizzakh province, will pay off at any cost, said the Russian Ambassador to Uzbekistan Oleg Malginov at the annual press conference in Tashkent.
“This project will move smoothly. We proceed from the premise that the process will be resolved constructively and in the interests of all Central Asian countries. No matter how much money is spent on its construction, it will pay off. The main thing is that it meets Uzbekistan demand in energy,” he said.
Oleg Malginov added that currently the Uzbekistan nuclear power project is only being discussed at the experts level. Thus, the issue of what type of reactors to choose for the future plant is being discussed.
While, he added that there are countries that would not like this project to be implemented - in particular, because Uzbekistan has chosen a Russian partner.
In early September 2018, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and the head of the government of Uzbekistan Abdulla Aripov signed an agreement on cooperation in the construction of a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan.
Rosatom plans to build a complex of two 3+ generation power units with VVER-1200 reactors. It should be operational by 2030. Site near Lake Tuzkan in the Jizzakh province has been identified as priority for the nuclear plant project.
