Uzbekistan hopes that the new Afghan authorities can keep their promises and international obligations, they have no other way, the Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov told the Euractiv.
He recalled what obligations the Taliban movement assumed before the international community:
- creation of a representative government;
- the fight against international terrorism and drug trafficking;
- prevention of the deployment of various terrorist groups on the territory of the country, termination of any contacts with them;
- support of good-neighborly relations with the countries of the region.
“Even the slightest threat against other states should never again come from the territory of Afghanistan,” the Foreign Minister stressed.
“We think that the caretaker government of Afghanistan is able to take these important steps so the country in the near future could become an equal subject of interstate and international relations, a part of the civilized world,” said Abdulaziz Kamilov. "There is no other way, only this can lead the Afghan people to progress and prosperity, and Afghanistan to the long-awaited peace."
The minister added that the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is close to catastrophic.
“But it is within our power to provide effective and urgent assistance to the people of Afghanistan,” he said. "As a priority step, we believe it is possible to use the international community to help unfreeze Afghanistan's international assets, lift sanctions, and also provide effective assistance in restoring the entire banking system of the country."
