Uzbek citizens who get citizenship of another state could be obliged to notify of this within 30 calendar days, the Ministry of Internal Affairs said with reference to Farkhod Ashmatov, a member of the Committee on Defense and Security of the Legislative Chamber.

It is planned to add liability In the of Administrative Liability Code for failure to notify the presence of a second citizenship within the prescribed timeline.

In addition, administrative responsibility is introduced for the use by a person deprived of Uzbek citizenship of a passport or ID-card of Uzbekistan.

As Farkhod Ashmatov noted, the MPs unanimously adopted amendments to the legislation in the second and third readings at the plenary session on August 24. The Legislative Chamber did not report on the discussion of this issue.

In Uzbekistan, according to the Citizenship law, the double citizenship is not recognized by Uzbekistan. Acquisition of a foreign citizenship shall be grounds for the loss of citizenship of Uzbekistan.

The MP said that some citizens of Uzbekistan, living in countries where dual citizenship is not prohibited, are getting their citizenship.

According to him, the police and consular offices are entrusted with the task of identifying citizens of Uzbekistan who voluntarily acquired the citizenship of another state, but there is no obligation for citizens to notify state bodies about acquiring a second citizenship.

The amendment will allow "to prevent problems associated with obtaining foreign citizenship without renouncing the citizenship of Uzbekistan" and also "to prevent possible negative consequences arising from dual citizenship”, added Farhod Ashmatov.
