On August 11, the President Shavkat Mirziyoyev got acquainted with the projects to improve drinking water supply in the Surkhandarya province, the presidential press service said.

Today 46% of the population of Surkhandarya province does not have access to centralized drinking water supply, with 216 hydraulic structures and more than 3,000 km of water supply networks in the province requiring to be repaired. There is an increased mineralization of water in the southern provinces of the province and the city of Termez, it was noted at the event.

In this regard, during a trip to the Surkhandarya province on June 2, the President instructed to lay the main water supply network from the Tupalang reservoir.

According to the preliminary project, which was presented by the chairman of Uzbekgidroenergo Abdugani Sanginov, in the lower part of the reservoir it is planned to build structures for damping the pressure, purification and distribution of water, from which 361 km of pipelines will be laid to the water distribution units. The facility's capacity will be 200 thousand cubic meters of water per day.

The construction of the system will allow the water supply of 1.7 million residents of the Sariosiyo, Denau, Shurchi, Kumkurgan, Dzharkurgan, Bandykhan, Kyzyryk, Sherabad, Angora, Muzrabot, Termez districts and Termez city will improve.

The Minister of Housing and Communal Services Sherzod Khidoyatov told Uzbekistan 24 TV channel said that the project will be divided into several stages, and the water supply will begin immediately after the water pipe is laid in the districts.

The total project cost is estimated at US$ 138 million and is scheduled to be commissioned in 2024. Initially, it was reported about the laying of a main network with a length of 400 km and drawing US$ 150 million from international financial institutions.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev approved the project and instructed to start its phased implementation and underscored the importance of carrying out construction work in conjunction with the Obod qishloq program, the introduction of public-private partnership mechanisms in the water supply sector was.

The Tupalang reservoir is part of the general irrigation system of the Surkhandarya province, which also includes the largest South Surkhan reservoir in the province, the Oqtepa reservoir, several pumping stations, hydropower facilities and other structures. Its creation began in the late 1960s and lasted for almost two decades. The reservoir capacity has been increased from 380 million to 500 million cubic meters.

By a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers dated March 29, 2021, consent was given to the proposal to transfer the Tupalang reservoir to Uzbekhydroenergo JSC by increasing its authorized capital by the book value of the facility.
