On January 15, deputies of the Legislative Chamber elected Feruza Eshmatova as the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) replacing Ulugbek Mukhammadiev who had held this post since May 2015, the press service of the lower house said.

Prior to that, Feruza Eshmatova, 41, served as chairman of the Senate Committee on Women’s Affairs and Gender Equality.

The Ombudsman is elected for a term of five years. The candidacy is nominated by the President of Uzbekistan. The candidacy must now be approved by the Senate.
