On December 23, 2020, political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of Uzbekistan and Japan were held in the form of a video conference, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The delegations were led by Uzbek Deputy Foreign Minister Furqat Siddiqov and Special Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan for Central Asia Shuichi Tokuda.

The parties reportedly discussed the ways to further deepen and expand the Uzbek-Japanese strategic partnership ties in political, trade, economic, investment, cultural and humanitarian spheres, cooperation within international organizations and multilateral structures.

The schedule and organizational aspects of future joint activities, including multilateral cooperation within Japan + Central Asia format were touched upon.

The parties expressed interest in restoring the previous upward trend in the economic ties and stepping up contacts between the businesses of the two countries and noted that it is important to continue close cooperation with the Japanese company Yamanashi Gakuin to set up a joint university.
