Uzbekistan ranked 106th in the latest UN Human Development Index (HDI) for 2019. The HDI is a statistic of life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators, which are used to rank countries into four tiers of human development. A country scores higher HDI when the lifespan is higher, the education level is higher, and the GDP per capita is higher.

Uzbekistan’s HDI value for 2019 is 0.720— which put the country in the high human development category—positioning it at 106 out of 189 countries and territories. Between 2000 and 2019, Uzbekistan’s HDI value increased from 0.595 to 0.720, an increase of 20.7 percent.

Uzbekistan’s 2019 HDI of 0.720 is below the average of 0.753 for countries in the high human development group and below the average of 0.791 for countries in Europe and Central Asia.

From Central Asia, the countries which are close to Uzbekistan in 2019 HDI, Kazakhstan ranked 51st (0.825), Turkmenistan - 111th (0.715), Kyrgyzstan - 120th (0.697) and Tajikistan - 125th (0.668).

Norway topped the index, followed by Ireland and Switzerland. Among emerging Asian economies, Malaysia was ranked 62, along with other countries with very high human development.
