The area of forest plantations on the dry bottom of the Aral Sea during the winter-spring period increased to 1.2 million hectares, the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade (MIFT) said.

The Deputy PM/Minister of Investments and Foreign Trade Sardor Umurzakov and the UN Resident Coordinator, Helena Fraser, held the fourth meeting of the management committee of the Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Human Security for the Aral Sea region on July 14 via videoconference.

At the meeting, the parties noted that 100 billion soums were provided for the creation of protective forest vegetation in the drained part of the Aral Sea. Planting desert plants - saxaul and tamarix on the dried bottom of the Aral Sea should help to retain the sand and salt formed on the dried sea floor.

During the talks, the parties approved new projects, namely, the construction of a multidisciplinary hospital in Muynak district and US$ 12.4 million to implement a number of innovations.

Note: The Fund, created in November 2018 under the auspices of the UN, plans to raise US$ 123.2 million over five years to create jobs, improve social and environmental conditions in the disaster zone, where more than 2 million people live. Among the Fund’s donors are the European Union, Norway and Finland. Agreements have been reached with the governments of Japan, South Korea and Switzerland.
