The accelerator lab of the UN Development Program in Uzbekistan on March 11 launched a crowdfunding campaign to plant greenery on the bottom of the Aral Sea. The initiative aims to mitigate the effects of environmental disasters in the region and improve the livelihoods of the local people.

The primary goal of the Green Aral Sea campaign is to plant a forest of 100 thousand saxaul seedlings on a dry bottom on an area of ​​100 hectares, the UNDP office said.

The campaign is being supported by a number of government bodies in Uzbekistan and several sponsors.

The initiative is part of a large-scale program to solve the Aral Sea region problems. It is detailed in the Concept for the transformation of the Aral Sea region into a zone of environmental innovation and technology, which is implemented by the Government of Uzbekistan in partnership with UNDP.
