On March 6, the Cabinet of Ministers issued a decree introducing a system for processing and issuing national ID cards, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

According to the document, from January 1, 2021, all newborn citizens of Uzbekistan, stateless persons and foreign citizens permanently residing in Uzbekistan will be provided with ID-cards valid for 10 years.

ID cards will be valid only in Uzbekistan, with international biometric passports required for overseas travels.

ID-cards will be issued systematically from January 1, 2021 to January 1, 2030, the statement said.

Replacement of previously issued biometric passports of the 2011 model, residence permits for stateless persons and foreign citizens will be carried out as they expire or ahead of expiration date at owners’ request.

The cyrrent biometric passports of an Uzbekistan citizen of the 2011 model shall no longer be valid from January 1, 2030.

The transition to the ID cards system will take into account the experience of developed countries and will accelerate the implementation of a digital identification system, help automate the process of integrating primary citizens' data with data systems of ministries and departments, facilitate and optimize the process of providing public services to the public, – the statement concluded.
