Today, the Chamber of Lawyers hosted a meeting with members of the Chamber and the media to mark the 20th anniversary of the Lawyer magazine, during which, the Speaker of the Chamber made remarks about the shortcomings in the industry and the years of recession.

“What can we say about the status of lawyers? There are only 4,000 lawyers in Uzbekistan with its population of 33 million. One lawyer per 8,500 people. This means that the demand for lawyers is barely satisfied. In May this year, we analyzed about 42 countries. We compared Uzbekistan with the European countries, other Central Asian countries and other countriesin Asia. Uzbekistan ranked in the bottom in terms of lawyers per population, ahead of only Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, where there is one for every 12-14 thousand people. The other former Soviet republics, including Russia, Kazakhstan, and the Baltic states, there is one lawyer for every 1-1,500 people.

In some countries there are a lot of lawyers. In Turkey, for example, there are 125,000 lawyers. As you know, Garcia-Sayan, the Special Rapporteur arrived in Uzbekistan in September. He noted that there were 85,000 lawyers in Peru. The low number of lawyers means that the population is underrepresented in legal advice,” he said.
