Kashkadarya province criminal court announced the verdict Monday against Zokir Aliyev, 46, a native of Kashkadarya province, a U.S. citizen who has no criminal record, the official representative of the Supreme Court Aziz Abidov said.

Zokir Aliyev, who lives in the U.S. and who arrived in Uzbekistan to see his relatives, was detained on suspicion of involvement in terrorist-related activities, but was soon released.

The court, having examined the materials of the criminal case, found Zokir Aliyev guilty of committing crimes under part 1 of Article 159 (Encroachment on the Constitutional order of the Republic of Uzbekistan) and part 1 of Article 244-2 (Creation, Leadership, Participation in Religious Extremist, Separatist, Fundamentalist or Other Prohibited Organizations) of the Criminal Code.

"When determining the penalty for the defendant, the court relied on the principles of humanism and justice enshrined in the Constitution and the criminal legislation," the representative of the Supreme Court said.

With the application of articles 57 (Reduced sentence) and 59 (Sentencing for several crimes), the court imposed a fine against Zakir Aliyev 600 times the minimum wage , 1.05 million soums  - (calculated at the MW rate of the 1990s). When annoncing the verdict, the court took into account the fact that "Zokir Aliyev, after 2000, for almost 18 years had not been engaged in criminal activities."
