All construction works will be suspended in Samarkand, said the city mayor Furkat Rakhimov during a meeting Saturday. The mayor noted that some media outlets have recently published critical materials about the ongoing construction works, which had already cause irreparable damage to Samarkand's historical heritage, the mayor's office said in a statement.

Rakhimov acknowledged that the city needs a new master plan to avoid the negative consequences of construction works and preserve historical monuments included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

A working group has been formed to develop Samarkand’s new master plan valid at least until 2035. In the future, all works will be perfromed on the basis of the said master plan, the statement said.

According to the officials of the Samarkand Architectural and Construction Institute, the current master plan of the city was relevant in 1990-2005.
