The observation mission of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has recognized that Uzbekistan presidential election held on December 4 were open, free and democratic.

The head of the mission, the SCO Secretary General, Rashid Alimov, made a statement  at a briefing in Tashkent on December 5, Turkistan Press Information Agency said.

"Our mission officially states that the Uzbekistan presidential election complied with the requirements of the election legislation of the Republic of Uzbekistan and its international obligations", - Rashid Alimov said.

"The mission has not noticed any violation of the National Election Law that could cast doubt on the legitimacy of the elections. The mission recognizes the elections to have been open, free and democratic,"- he underscored.

The Mission stated that the presidential election was an important step for the further advancement of democratic processes in Uzbekistan.

The Head of Mission congratulated the people of Uzbekistan on the presidential election and wished success to the future president-elect in implementing the policy of strengthening the independence, sovereignty and socio-economic development of the country, as well as progress and prosperity.

Rashid Alimov also expressed his deep gratitude to the Central Election Commission, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other organizations and agencies in Uzbekistan, which created opportunities for free and open activity of the SCO mission during their work.
