A deputy mayor of Kasansay district in Namangan province was detained on suspicion of taking a bribe, the press service of the State Security Service said.

The official was detained during a sting operation as he accepted 65 million soums in his service car, the service said. The money was intended to cover the purchase and installation of solar panels.

The service said the official threatened to give land leased by a local entrepreneur to another businessman unless the entrepreneur installed a 20-kilowatt solar power system at the official’s home.

A criminal case has been opened against the suspect under Article 210 of the Criminal Code, which covers bribe-taking.

The operation was carried out by the State Security Service together with the Department for Combating Economic Crimes under the Prosecutor General’s Office.
