Tashkent’s city administration plans to build dedicated bus lanes down the center of streets, on the bus rapid transit (BRT) model, on four more sections totaling 17.9 km, it said.
The sections are Mukimi Street (4.6 km), Karatash and Kukcha Darvoza streets (4.2 km), Parkent Street (2.8 km) and Mirzo Ulugbek Avenue (6.3 km). Trams ran along them until the service was closed in early May 2016.
Specialists analyzed more than 150 km of streets used by public transport routes before selecting the stretches, the administration said.
“The main goal of the project is to make public transport fast, comfortable, safe and accessible, so that a bus ride becomes an attractive alternative to a private car,” the statement said.
The mayor has signed the decision, and a budget is being drawn up for design documentation, which preliminary estimates put at about 6.5 billion soums. The money will come from the Tashkent City Development Fund, the administration said.
Toshkent Invest Company will be the client. Design firms, contractors and technical supervision providers will be chosen through competitive tenders. Utilities will be surveyed before construction, and faulty networks repaired, relocated or replaced.
The requirements include convenient pedestrian routes, road signs, bus stop complexes and lighting. Roads will be surfaced with polymer-modified stone mastic asphalt, used in the capital since 2023.
A BRT line is now under construction on Shahrisabz Street (3.2 km), extending the line on Shota Rustaveli Street (6.5 km). It will continue along Amir Temur Avenue (7.6 km) and Yangi Sergeli Street (5.5 km), the administration said.
