Authorities at Namangan Airport thwarted an attempt to smuggle gold bars and jewelry worth roughly 1.1 billion soums to India, the State Security Service (DXX) reported.
During a search, five residents of Andijan and Fergana provinces traveling on a Namangan-Delhi flight were found carrying gold bars weighing a combined 555 grams, along with 200 grams of jewelry. According to the DXX, the gold had been concealed inside their bodies.
A preliminary inquiry is underway.
In August, two attempts to smuggle jewelry and foreign currency out of the country using children were uncovered at the Navoi border customs post in Tashkent province. In one case, a woman hid gold bars in an infant's diaper; in the other, a citizen of a neighboring country tried to smuggle out $40,000 concealed under her 14-year-old daughter's clothing.
