Chairman of the Board of Uzbekneftegaz Abdugani Sanginov held a working meeting with executives of CCDC, a drilling company operating under the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), the Uzbekneftegaz press service said in a statement.
During the talks, the sides focused on accelerating efforts to contain and mitigate the industrial accident at the Mustaqillikning 25 Yilligi (25 Years of Independence, M25) gas field in the Boysun district.
Both parties emphasized the importance of concluding all preparatory stages as quickly as possible to launch immediate on-site response operations. Specifically, agreements were reached to transport heavy-duty drilling rigs, high-pressure specialized technological equipment, and crucial technical tools to the site. They also agreed to deploy highly skilled specialists and ensure the timely commencement of rescue drilling operations.
Furthermore, to keep the project on track and allow for rapid engineering decisions, the two companies resolved to tighten direct cooperation between their technical experts.
The meeting also looked beyond the immediate crisis; both sides discussed expanding joint projects for new drilling and geological exploration programs across the oil and gas sector once the industrial accident in Boysun is completely resolved.
The M25 field is located roughly 20 kilometers from the town of Boysun. Estimates suggest the field holds gas reserves exceeding 150 billion cubic meters, with some sources placing the potential capacity as high as 170 billion cubic meters.
On September 1, 2024, Well No. 604 at the M25 field ruptured and caught fire during routine drilling operations, leading to an industrial blowout. This resulted in the dangerous release of hydrogen sulfide (toxic sulfur gas) into the atmosphere. Consequently, residents living in communities adjacent to the field were immediately evacuated to safer areas.
