A total of 893 Asian houbara bustards have been released into the wild on the Ustyurt Plateau, the Committee on Ecology and Climate Change of Karakalpakstan announced.
The initiative was carried out in partnership with Falcon Hunting Solutions. Moving forward, conservationists plan to release between 2,000 and 3,000 birds into their natural habitat annually.
The Asian houbara bustard (also known as the MacQueen's bustard) is officially listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan and the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is also protected under Appendix I of the CITES Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
