A senior assistant to a judge at the Surkhandarya province court attempted to leverage his official position for personal gain, the State Security Service (DXX) reported.

The investigation revealed that the assistant promised to intervene in a criminal case currently before the Angor District Criminal Court. He claimed he could secure a court order to re-evaluate and significantly reduce the 6.3 billion soums in damages attributed to two defendants. Furthermore, he promised to ensure they received non-custodial sentences and to have their pretrial detention orders overturned.

In exchange for these services, he demanded and received $53,000 from a relative of the defendants. He was caught red-handed by DXX and prosecutor’s office agents during the exchange.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the judicial assistant under Article 168, Part 4, clause "a" (Large-scale Fraud) and Articles 28 and 211, Part 1 (Attempted Bribery) of the Criminal Code, with the investigation ongoing.
