The State Security Service (DXX) has reported the arrest of a mahalla chairman and a local mayor’s assistant in Andijan district on suspicion of corruption.
According to the investigation, the two individuals conspired to solicit a bribe from an Andijan city resident. They allegedly promised to facilitate the transfer of 30 sotkas (approximately 0.3 hectares) of land: two sotkas originally allocated to another individual for livestock farming and an additional 28 sotkas from the state reserve.
The suspects reportedly claimed they could rezone the plot, designating a portion for commercial (non-residential) use and the remainder for residential construction. They priced the land at $57,000 and requested an additional $3,000 to process the paperwork through their "contacts" within the cadastral authorities.
During a sting operation conducted by the DXX and the Department for Combating Economic Crimes under the Prosecutor General's Office, the two men were caught red-handed while accepting an initial payment of $31,000 ($28,000 for the land and $3,000 for the documentation). A criminal case has been initiated, and an investigation is currently underway.
