In the Bakhmal district of Jizzakh province, a pilot project may soon introduce "ice stupas"—artificial glaciers designed to combat seasonal water shortages, the representative office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Uzbekistan reported.
An FAO delegation recently visited the Jizzakh province to meet with District Khokim Aziz Ergashev. Their discussions focused on climate change adaptation, efficient water management, the advancement of horticulture, and providing support for small-scale greenhouse operations.
During the visit, the delegation conducted field observations across several mountainous sites, consulting with local residents to identify areas where these interventions could best mitigate water scarcity.
Experts believe that the runoff from these melting artificial glaciers could provide a vital water supply for orchards, household plots, and other agricultural lands during early spring and the critical growing season.
This initiative is expected to bolster local livelihoods and enhance agricultural resilience in areas where water demand peaks at the start of the vegetative cycle.
