Uzbekistan has seen a slight uptick in meningitis cases since the start of 2026, according to a report from the Committee for Sanitary and Epidemiological Welfare and Public Health.

The Committee’s data reveals that 174 cases of meningococcal infection were registered between January and March, with 168 of those involving children under the age of 14. However, the report noted a positive trend in April, with infection rates dropping by 14% compared to the previous month.

To prevent the further spread of the disease—particularly among the youth—health authorities have procured 8,024 doses of the vaccine. So far, 4,862 individuals who were in close contact with infected patients have been vaccinated. For those who cannot receive the vaccine due to medical contraindications, doctors are administering chemoprophylaxis (preventative drug therapy).

“Extensive measures are being implemented across the country to maintain a stable epidemiological situation. We urge the public to rely only on official and credible sources for information regarding the outbreak and the response efforts,” the Committee stated.
