A large-scale inspection has been underway since April 10 in the Chorvoq tourism zone of the Bostanliq district to crack down on the illegal dumping of construction waste, the National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change reported.
The crackdown is being spearheaded by a joint task force comprising representatives from the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the National Guard, eco-police, tourism police, and local government officials.
Reportedly, analysis found a nationwide surge in construction activity, which in turn has exacerbated the problem of illegal dumping in unauthorized areas. In the Chorvoq Free Tourism Zone specifically, construction has skyrocketed tenfold since 2020. As a result, there has been a sharp rise in instances where developers disregard environmental standards and abandon construction debris in prohibited locations.
During raids conducted between April 11 and 13, authorities identified 102 violations related to illegal dumping and filed administrative charges. Additionally, 19 cases of air quality violations were recorded. To deter further environmental neglect, online surveillance cameras have already been installed at 10 key locations, with plans to expand the system to an additional 40 sites across the province.
