Presidents Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan and Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan held talks in Bukhara this Saturday, according to the Uzbek leader’s press service. The Kazakh President arrived in the historic city for a working visit.
According to the Kazakh presidency website, Shavkat Mirziyoyev described the Bukhara summit as a vital step in expanding the multifaceted ties between the two nations. He remarked that as the closest of neighbors and allies, the people of Uzbekistan sincerely celebrate Kazakhstan’s successful reforms.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev underscored the significance of the visit "given the current volatile geopolitical climate." He stated, "For Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan is a reliable strategic partner... There are no contradictions or disagreements between our countries. Our signed agreements and arrangements are being consistently implemented. The Kazakh government fully recognizes the necessity of fulfilling our mutual obligations without reservation."
Delegations from both nations reviewed the expansion of ties across diverse sectors. Trade turnover reached $5 billion last year, with both sides aiming to double that figure to $10 billion in the near future.
Joint industrial cooperation projects are already underway in automotive manufacturing, infrastructure development, logistics, electronics, and construction materials. The leaders also discussed a fresh wave of initiatives in chemistry, geology, energy, and the production of automotive components.
The Presidents emphasized the urgent need for joint measures to modernize border infrastructure, eliminate logistical bottlenecks, and establish efficient transport corridors to provide better access to global markets.
Talks also centered on accelerating major regional projects, such as the construction of the Kambarata-1 Hydropower Plant and advancing initiatives for green energy exports.
"The importance of collaborative efforts regarding the rational use of water resources and the promotion of regional environmental initiatives—including 'Clean Air' projects in border areas—was strongly underscored," the statement read.
Discussing the "Clean Air" initiative proposed by the Uzbek President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted its urgent relevance for Kazakhstan’s major cities as well.
"I share your concerns regarding the environmental state of Tashkent. We face a very difficult situation in Almaty. Unfortunately, Almaty has joined the list of the world's most polluted major cities, and we must take the most immediate measures... We can achieve a great deal within the framework of this initiative. It will compel both local authorities and entrepreneurs to act more responsibly in protecting the environment and nature as a whole," the Kazakh leader stated.
The two nations intend to expand cooperation in innovation and high-tech sectors, including space technologies, digitalization, e-commerce, and startup support.
The Presidents also agreed to revitalize cultural and humanitarian exchanges, including holding Days of Culture and youth forums, while strengthening partnerships in tourism and the creative economy.
Finally, the heads of state exchanged views on pressing issues regarding the international and regional political landscape.
