On April 1, the Surkhandarya Province Economic Court adjudicated a high-profile intellectual property case involving global fashion powerhouses Hugo Boss AG (Germany), Puma SE (Germany), and Tommy Hilfiger Licensing B.V. (Netherlands). According to the Ministry of Justice, the legal action was initiated by representatives of these international brands to safeguard their respective trademarks within Uzbekistan.
The court ruled that the defendant—whose identity was not disclosed in the official report—had been illegally utilizing these world-renowned trademarks without any licensing agreements. It confirmed that the party had not only manufactured and sold counterfeit goods but had also engaged in active promotional campaigns for the unauthorized products.
Under the court’s ruling, the infringer is mandated to immediately cease the use of the trademarks, withdraw all counterfeit merchandise from circulation, and oversee its destruction. Additionally, the defendant must remove all infringing logos and branding from any remaining products and packaging.
The financial penalties are equally definitive: the court ordered the defendant to pay a total of 61.8 million soums in compensation directly to the affected companies. Including state duties, postage, and legal fees, the total sum to be recovered from the perpetrator exceeds 111 million soums.
