Road and transport infrastructure in Surkhandarya province will be modernized, the president Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced at a government meeting today.
According to him, two years ago, a $183 million project was launched jointly with the Asian Development Bank to convert 111 kilometers of the Baysun-Denau road to a concrete pavement. Once the project is operational, freight volumes are expected to double, and travel time will be reduced from three hours to one and a half.
The president also noted that the 178-kilometer highway connecting Uzbekistan with Afghanistan and Tajikistan had been requiring an overhaul for approximately 30 years. Responsible agencies have been handed directives to begin construction work within three months.
Currently, a passenger train from Tashkent to Termez takes over 14 hours. An agreement has been reached with South Korean partners to supply Hyundai Rotem high-speed trains. This year, plans are underway to adapt the Toshguzor-Boysun-Kumkurgan section for high-speed traffic and begin electrifying the 103-kilometer Kumkurgan-Kudukli section.
Furthermore, a decision has been made to launch new flights between Termez and Istanbul and Termez and Dubai.
According to the president, approximately 100,000 people from Shurchi, Denau, Sariasiya, Sherabad, and Baysun travel to the provincial center by car every day. The 125 buses delivered to the province have been assigned primarily to these routes.
As of late 2026, 56,000 residents of the Muzrabat district are expected to have centralized drinking water for the first time. Construction of sewer networks will also begin in the centers of the Muzrabat, Altynsay, Angor, Kizirik, and Baysun districts.
