The Embassy of Bangladesh in Tashkent, Uzbekistan observed the ‘Great Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day’ in a befitting manner on the 21st February 2026 at the Embassy.

The day’s program began with the hoisting of the national flag of Bangladesh at half-mast by Ambassador Dr. Mohammad Monirul Islam. Accompanied by the attending dignitaries, including teachers and students of Uzbek Universities as well as members of Bangladeshi expatriates living in Tashkent, the Ambassador placed a floral wreath at the Shaheed Minar (Martyrs’ monument) temporarily built at the Embassy premises. Messages given by the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and   State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh marking this special occasion were read out.

Paying deep homage to the memory of the language martyrs, Bangladesh Ambassador Dr. Islam, in his remarks, shed light on the historical context and significance of the Great Language Movement in 1952. He expressed hope that the recognition of the 21st February as International Mother Language Day by UNESCO would not only help preserve all the mother languages of the world, but also cement the bonds of friendship and understanding between the peoples of all languages and cultures across the globe. He stressed the importance of promoting multilingualism and multiculturalism in all spheres of the society to further advance peace, progress and prosperity of the world. He also reiterated the sincerity and commitment of the Bangladesh government in upholding and expanding linguistic and cultural diversity.

The Embassy also recently organized an event with the Diplomat University in Tashkent, marking the celebration of the International Mother Language Day at the University auditorium, participated by a significant number of diplomats, Rectors, professors, researchers and students. The event was greatly applauded by the audience and covered by a couple of popular television channels of Uzbekistan.
