On April 18, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev chaired a government meeting on the progress of energy projects, including small hydroelectric power plants and the small-scale nuclear power plant, the presidential press service said.
According to forecasts, by 2035, power consumption in the country will reach 121 billion kWh. In this regard, by 2030, it is planned to increase the share of green energy in the total generation volume to 54%. Hydropower and nuclear energy are named the most promising areas.
In 2025-2026, it is planned to build 2983 micro-hydroelectric power plants with the total 167 MW capacity. This will allow for the annual generation of 500 million kWh of electricity and save 151 million cubic meters of natural gas. During the construction stage, 1,200 people will be involved, after the commissioning of the facilities - 520 permanent employees.
Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov told the Uzbekistan 24 TV channel that 1,185 micro hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 65 MW are planned to be commissioned in 2025. He underscored that such projects could become an additional source of income for businesses. The president instructed to prepare standard hydroelectric power plant projects, assist businesses and attract funds from international financial institutions.
The meeting also discussed plans to use nuclear energy as one of the basic sources. Director of the Atomic Energy Agency Azim Akhmedkhadjaev said in an interview with the Uzbekistan 24 TV channel that this meeting had been the third on nuclear energy project "in a short period of time."
He emphasized that the project was under the personal oversight of the president. The head of state separately instructed that leading companies “participate in the construction of the small nuclear power plant.”
“Today we reported that a consortium of companies from China, Hungary and other European and Asian countries will be formed to implement this project at the highest quality level,” said the chief of Uzatom.
According to him, Shavkat Mirziyoyev had given additional instructions to accelerate the implementation of all activities and ensure constant information on the progress of the project.
