Children's safety on roads was one of the items of the annual report of the Children's Ombudsperson Surayo Rakhmonova to the Senate on March 18.
A survey conducted in 2024 with the National Guard found that 25% of schools in the country (10,145 schools in total) are located near highways, which increases the likelihood of accidents involving children.
The Children's Ombudsperson reported that she submitted a request to the Cabinet that officials should focus on facilitating comfortable and safe conditions in front of schools and kindergartens to protect children from road accidents.
308 raised pedestrian crossings have already been installed in high-risk areas as a result in front of schools and kindergartens across the country.
77 traffic lights with a signal switch button have been installed at unregulated pedestrian crossings in places where there are four or more lanes in front of schools and kindergartens. Road markings have been updated at 152 pedestrian crossings made of cold plastic. In addition, 141 speed limit signs have been installed in front of schools and kindergartens, she said.
"We demand that the Interior Ministry equip safe crossings in front of all schools in the country that are at risk as soon as possible," she emphasized.
The Ombudsperson added that her office also surveyed gross violations of the rules for transporting passengers, in this case children, to kindergartens.
In particular, 15 traffic lights with a call button and 122 video cameras have been installed near schools located near highways and streets. In 2025, it is planned to install another 248 traffic lights with a call button and 455 video cameras.
Schools located near low-traffic streets of cities and districts, as well as in residential areas, are equipped with 308 raised pedestrian crossings. 651 speed bumps have been installed. In 2025, it is planned to equip raised pedestrian crossings near 678 schools and install 1,358 speed bumps.
Erali Bozorov noted that today 1,628 road signs have been installed near crossings near schools, and 127 pedestrian crossings have gotten additional artificial lighting. It was found that no new accidents were recorded in the areas where these works were completed.
