Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian military have captured about thirty citizens from Central Asian countries. It is not yet clear from which countries these people are, as they did not have identity documents with them, the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice said.

"Ukrainian servicemen captured about thirty citizens from Central Asian countries. The citizenship of prisoners of war is established mainly from their words, since documents confirming their identity are often missing," said the Minister of Justice of Ukraine Olga Stefanishyna.

The ministry added that "regardless of citizenship, prisoners of war in places of detention have the same legal status, which is enshrined in both international and national regulations."

"The citizenship of a prisoner of war, including dual citizenship, does not affect his legal status," the ministry concluded.
