5,716 corruption crimes by 6,898 individuals were committed in Uzbekistan in 2024, the chief of the press service of the Anti-Corruption Agency, Sherzod Saparov said.

According to him, compared to 2023, the number of corruption crimes decreased in the Khududgaztaminot company, the water management sector, local mayor’s offices and banks. However, the level of corruption has increased in higher education, transport and agriculture.

The areas of preschool and school education, healthcare, poverty reduction and employment are in top in terms of corruption crimes.

309 corruption crimes were committed by mayor assistants in mahallas, in charge of poverty reduction and supporting business since 2022.

The levels of corruption risks in the functions of government agencies were assessed, and an electronic register of relations prone to corruption was created.

Administrative liability measures were applied to five officials who violated the requirements of the legislation on openness, the Agency representative said.

In 2024, Anti Corription Agency received 4,176 letters. Based on the findings, the Agency sent 55 requests to government agencies. As a result, 41 submissions were made to rectify violations, 7 people were brought to disciplinary liability, and the employment contract with one of them was terminated.

The Agency also conducted an anti-corruption examination of 327 draft regulations. In 71% of cases (233 drafts), 676 factors contributing to corruption were identified, and measures were taken to eliminate them.

Earlier, a study by UNDP and other organizations showed that most residents of Uzbekistan are ready to report corruption, but fear negative consequences for themselves. Receiving and giving bribes are condemned by the majority, but small gifts for quality service are perceived in society as the norm.

Corruption is rampant in Uzbekistan and is present at virtually present at all levels and sectors. Rarely, a senior official, district mayor, prosecutor and etc can be reported to have committed a corruption-related crime, there is always some scapegoat, who consents to take all the guilty, and who is promised a release with reasonable time period, and rea-assumin a public role in the future.
