The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi hosted the Uzbek government delegation led by the chairman of the Committee on Industry, Radiation and Nuclear Safety of Uzbekistan, Abduvaqqos Rafikov at the Agency’s headquarters in Vienna.

During the meeting, Rafael Grossi was reportedly briefed about the rapid economic growth of Uzbekistan and the increasing need for the development of atomic energy of the vountry, as well as the latest changes in the structure and status of the national regulator of Uzbekistan in the field of industrial, radiation and nuclear safety.

The parties focused on the plans to build a small-scale nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan and noted that Uzbekistan was one of the first countries implementing such a project.

Rafael Grossi confirmed the intention of the leadership of the Agency to support the efforts of the government of Uzbekistan to strengthen the national regulator through the various platforms of IAEA. In particular, he proposed conducting an expert mission aimed at verifying the compliance of the safety regulatory infrastructure in Uzbekistan with IAEA safety standards.
