The Uzbek authorities are closely monitoring the situation related to the recent elections in Taiwan, the Foreign Ministry of Uzbekistan said today in a statement.
“We reiterate that we firmly support the One China Principle and that the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory,” the statement said.
The Foreign Ministry also emphasized that Uzbekistan “resolutely stood for the peaceful development of relations between the two coasts and supports all the efforts of the Chinese government to achieve the reunification of China.”
The presidential election took place in Taiwan on January 13, in which the current Vice President of Taiwan, the leader of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party Lai Qingde, who advocates the independence of the island won.
His main rival was the mayor of New Taipei, Hou Yui, who represents the conservative Kuomintang party and advocates the development of more active diplomatic and economic cooperation with Beijing.
After the count of 98% votes, Lai Qingde's result was 40.2%, Hou Yu got 33.4% of the votes.
