In Jalakuduk district of Andijan province, the assistant to the mayor in the mahalla D. I was detained, who is suspected of receiving a bribe, the press service of the Department for Combating Economic Crimes under the Prosecutor General's Office said.
The assistant to the district mayor was assigned to the coal warehouse as part of the working group to oversee and ensure the safety of coal fuel supplies in the autumn-winter period.
According to the department, taking advantage of his official position, D.I. demanded a bribe of $600 from the chairman of the mahalla in exchange for allocation of 38.1 tons of coal to 44 households in the district at a lower price, the report says. While receiving 7 million soums, the mayor’s assistant was detained in his Nexia-2 car.
A criminal case has been launched under Taking a bribe charge of the Criminal Code, with an investigation underway.
Financial crimes committed by assistants to mayors, vested with broad powers, have been ocassionally reported. Two weeks ago in Surkhandarya province, the assistant to the mayor embezzled 132 million soums by issuing preferential loans in the name of residents. The money was transferred to the account of his company Volunteer Team.
In September in Bukhara, the assistant to the mayor in the Abu Ali ibn Sino mahalla embezzled 163 million soums by issuing preferential loans in the name of residents.
