414 citizens sustained poisoning in Uzbekistan in eight months of 2023, the food hygiene expert at Sanitary and Hygiene Department, Abdurahmon Ismailov said.

In eight months, 39 cases of group poisoning were recorded, in which 414 citizens were injured and three died. 86 of the victims are children. 21 cases of poisoning (53.8 percent) are caused by botulism, 13 cases (23 percent) by food poisoning, and 1 case (2.5 percent) by chemical poisoning.

Out of 21 cases of botulism caused by the consumption of home-made canned goods, 3 cases occurred in Jizzakh, 6 cases in Samarkand and 6 cases in Fergana provinces.

When analyzing the causes of the mentioned cases of food poisoning:

  • kitchens of restaurants and pubs, non-state educational institutions do not comply with the requirements of sanitary rules and norms;
  • kitchens are not fully equipped and the existing ones are in a worn or defective condition;
  • use of food products quality of which and safety are not guaranteed for cooking;

Study found that most of the cooks of restaurants and pubs are not trained in the field, they do not know the technologies of food preparation, the rules of food storage, transportation and sale.
