Kazakhstan may review the water agreement signed with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The agreement regulates the use of Syrdarya river in the field of irrigation and power generation.
Before 2024, Kazakhstan plans to amend the agreement with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan on the use of the resources of the Syrdarya basin. This possibility is reflected in the concept of water resources management for 2023-2029.
The brief description of the document indicates that this water agreement has been in force since 1998.
Under the current agreement, surplus electricity generated by hydroelectric power plants shall be transferred to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. In return, Kyrgyzstan receives energy, finance and commercial services from its neighbors.
Kazakhstan may have decided to amend the document due to the fact that water scarcity is becoming one of the main and growing problems in the region. According to climatologists, by 2040, in some countries of the region, the pressure on water resources will increase by 2.8 times. By 2050, the Syr Darya may become shallow by 15 percent.
