According to the Statistics Agency, the number of permanent population over the years is as follows:
- 1920 - 4.4 million people;
- 1930 - 4.9 million;
- 1940 - 6.6 million;
- 1950 - 6.2 million;
- 1960 - 8.4 million;
- 1970 - 11.8 million;
- 1980 - 15.8 million;
- 1990 - 20.2 million;
- 2000 - 24.5 million;
- 2010 - 28 million;
- 2020 - 33.9 million.
