Majoritarian-proportional (mixed) electoral system will be introduced in Uzbekistan in parliamentary elections for the Legislative Chamber and local deputies’ councils. This is stated in the president’s May 8 Priority measures for the implementation of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan in a new edition decree.

The decree noted that this proposal had been made by the chambers of the Oliy Majlis and political parties. The document recommends that the Legislative Chamber shall within a month develop a draft bill providing for the transition to the majoritarian-proportional electoral system.

In March the president himself proposed to switch to a mixed electoral system in order to enhance the role of political parties when he met with MPs. With such a system, part of the mandates will be distributed as per the proportional system (by party lists), and the other part - according to the majoritarian system (voting for a candidate).

Previous parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan were held according to the majoritarian system, in which candidates who received the majority of votes in their constituency were elected.
