The Legislative Chamber at its March 10 session adopted a resolution on holding a referendum on the new version of the Constitution. The event was broadcast live.
The popular vote is scheduled to take place on April 30. The ruling is sent to the Senate, which is expected to consider the document on March 14. If the upper house of parliament passes the document, it must be published in print within three days.
The Bill on the Constitution in a new edition will take effect from the day the results of the referendum are announced by the Central Election Commission. The provisions of the document will have the force of direct action, regardless of changes to other legislative acts arising from the new Constitution.
Of the 137 deputies, 134 supported the resolution, 2 abstained, and 1 did not vote.
As reported earlier, the text of the Constitution will change by 65%, Uzbekistan will be proclaimed a social state, the number of senators will be reduced, and other changes are proposed.
The need to reform the Constitution in November 2021 was announced by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in his inaugural speech, specifying that such a proposal is coming from the public. Congratulating the Uzbeks on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the Constitution in December of the same year, Shavkat Mirziyoyev proposed to adopt amendments to the 30th anniversary of the Constitution, that is, by December 8, 2022, but the adoption of the document was delayed.
In early March of this year, the head of state met with deputies and senators, as well as with the leadership of the Supreme Court. At the meeting, consultations were held on the results of consideration of the proposals of the population on amendments to the Constitution. It was stated that the bill would be considered by the Constitutional Court.
