Early on the morning of February 23 - at 5:37 am Tashkent time - an earthquake of magnitude 5.8 struck Tajikistan. Its epicenter was located on the territory of the Murgab district of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province.

According to the Republican Center for Seismic Predictive Monitoring of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, quakes were felt in almost all provinces of Uzbekistan.

The source of the earthquake lay at a depth of 147 km. Its distance from Tashkent was 435 km in a southeasterly direction.

The magnitude of quakes by provinces:

  • Ferghana province - 4 magnitude (at a distance of 227 km from the epicenter);
  • Andijan province - 4 magnitude (256 km);
  • Namangan province - 4 magnitude (294 km);
  • Syrdarya province - 3-4 magnitude (413 km);
  • Tashkent - 3-4 magnitude (435 km);
  • Jizzakh province - 3-4 magnitude (467 km);
  • Surkhandarya province - 3 magnitude (509 km);
  • Samarkand province - 3 magnitude (523 km);
  • Kashkadarya province - 3 magnitude (614 km);
  • Navoi province - 3 magnitude (666 km);
  • Bukhara province - 3 magnitude (739 km).

The center also reported that tremors were felt in Khorezm with a 2-3 magnitude (1092 km) and Karakalpakstan - 2-3 magnitude (1200 km), but later these provinces were removed from the message.

The first earthquake was followed by a series of aftershocks in the same province of Tajikistan: at 05:55 - magnitude 4.7 (depth - 136 km), at 06:06 - 4.2 (15 km) and at 06:35 - 4.5 (167 km).
