The Traffic Safety Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs set the goal of reducing the number of road accidents in the country and deaths in them by 15% in 2023. This was discussed at a meeting chaired by the department chief, Deputy Interior Minister Bekmurod Abdullayev.

According to the traffic police, last year 9902 accidents were officially registered in the country, which is by 99, or 1%, less than a year earlier - 10,001. The number of fatal accidents decreased by 111, or by 5.1%, from 2,197 to 2,086, and those who died as a result of accidents - by 70 people, or 2.9% - from 2,426 to 2,356. Meanwhile, accidents with injuries increased by 12, or 0.2% - 7,816 instead of 7,804 in 2021, and the number of injured increased by 376, or 3.9%, from 9,230 to 9,606 people.

Last year, there were 27.5 accidents per 100,000 people, and 23.7 for every 10,000 vehicles. The number of fatal accidents per 100,000 population was 5.8, or 5 per 10,000 vehicles. The number of accidents with injuries - 20.7 per 100,000 population, or 24.4 per 10,000 vehicles.

Note: As of January 1, 2023, the resident population of Uzbekistan topped 36,024,900 people, an increase by 753,624 people over the year. The number of registered vehicles at the beginning of 2023 reached 4,186,521, or by 364,652 units more than at the beginning of 2022.

In the vast majority of deaths in road accidents - 91.7%, or 2,161 - people were not wearing seat belts, 8.3%, or 195, of those who died due to accidents were fastened. Among those injured in road accidents, 66.9%, or 6,426, were not fastened, 33.1%, or 3,180 were fastened.

The traffic police notes that the number of road accidents has increased in Fergana, Jizzakh and Syrdarya provinces.

Among the innovations that the Traffic Safety Police is introducing to reduce the number of accidents and cases of death and injury on the roads is the assignment of a service employee to each mahalla of the country.

As reported earlier, 1,200 accidents were registered in Tashkent in 2022, which is more than 1,073 a year earlier. The number of deaths in accidents in Tashkent city in 2022 topped 136, of which 17 are children, 1,463 people were injured, including 56 minors.
