Former Tashkent mayor Jakhongir Ortiqhodjaev resigned from his city council deputy mandate. The decision was made by the city deputies council today. This was reported by two independent sources, including one of the deputies who attended the meeting.
According to the relevant laws, senator and deputy of the council has immunity during his term of office.
In January 2020, Jahongir Ortiqhodjaev was elected deputy of the council from the 48th constituency from the UzLiDeP party, and then a senator for a five-year term. His term of office was due until January 2025.
According to the laws, the powers of a deputy could be terminated early in the following cases:
- request in writing on resignation;
- electing or appointing him to a position, the occupation of which, according to the law, is incompatible with the exercise of powers of a deputy:
- taking effect of a court ruling in relation to him/her;
- his recall;
- declaring him/her incompetent by the court;
- recognizing him/her as missing or declaring him dead on the basis of a court decision that took legal force;
- loss of Uzbekistan citizenship;
In exceptional cases, the powers of a deputy may be terminated early by decision of the relevant council of people's deputies. The basis for considering such an issue may be behavior discrediting the high rank of a deputy.
Reportedly, the ex-mayor himself filed a request for resignation of deputy powers.
On January 16, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced the sacking of Jahongir Ortiqhodjaev, who had been in charge of the capital's administration since April 2018. “I fired him from his post for empty words, false reports, for failure to go down to the people,” the head of state said.
On the same day, a source reported that the ex-former and his family were registered for Uzbekistan Airways flight HY 271 to Istanbul, however Jahongir Ortiqhodjaev was not among the passengers.
