Port of Riga will be expanding cooperation with Uzbekistan Railways. The parties will work on expanding transit to and from Uzbekistan through Latvia. Uzbekistan Railways signed a memorandum of cooperation with Riga Free Port, the industry portal PortNews said.

The parties reached an agreement during the visit of the Minister of Transport of Uzbekistan Ilhom Mahkamov to Latvia. It is expected that this agreement will serve to tap the potential of transport and transit relations between the two countries.

The companies work on creating favorable conditions for import-export and transit cargo transportation between Latvia and Uzbekistan. The parties also mutually support transport and logistics projects.

Also, the port of Riga will be able to publish information on the Uzbekistan Railways website for cargo owners and enterprises of Uzbekistan. It contains information about the work of the port, tariffs for services, terms and benefits of working with the port.

Martinš Zemanis, deputy director of the port of Riga, expressed hope for active mutually beneficial cooperation in the near future. The Latvian side is tasked with strengthening economic relations and cooperation.

Year-to-date, the volume of cargo coming to Uzbekistan and vice versa through the port of Riga is increasing. For half a year, the port received 48,900 tons of cargo from the republic, including fruits, fertilizers and plastics. In the opposite direction, 52,000 tons - mainly Brazilian sugar - were sent.
