"A number of infrastructure accords have been signed between Uzbekistan Railways and leading Chinese construction companies the state visit of the Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to China. Chinese will help to build roads and a new road tunnel through the Kamchik Pass,” Khusniddin Khosilov, the chief engineer at Uzbekistan Temir Yollari, said in an interview to Uzbekistan channel.
Feasibility study for the project, titled Kamchik-2, for construction of a new road tunnel under the existing tunnel is being currently prepared by experts. The project with an estimated cost of about $ 175 million will be one of the largest of its kind in the history of Uzbekistan.
The second tunnel will be wider than the current one, which will increase its throughput capacity and will have modern ventilation and lighting systems.
Khosilov also mentioned the construction of a rail ring road in Tashkent city, to be built by Uzbekistan Railways. He did not specify the names of Chinese companies and also what role they are assigned to in these projects.
The Kamchik Pass is the only highway connecting the most densely populated part of Uzbekistan - the Ferghana Valley with the rest of the country.
