In 2020, the capacity of textile enterprises in Uzbekistan will allow to process the entire cotton crop. “In the first half of 2020, the capacity will be raised up to 1,030,000 tons, which will allow processing 100% of the cotton fiber grown in the country,” Uztekstilprom said.
The capacity of cotton fiber processing enterprises in 2010 was t around 270,000 tons, or only 27%. In 2017-2019, due to the technological re-equipment of textile enterprises, the volume of cotton processing reached 920,000 tons (or 80%).
In December 2019, the Ministry of Economy reported that starting in 2020, the export of raw cotton will be halted, and the cotton fiber will be fully processed locally.
“There are two stages in the development of the textile industry - one of the key sectors of the economy. The first is the full processing of cotton fiber. The second is the deep processing of yarn and the export of RMGs to increase the value added tax. We are now proceeding to the first stage. From 2020, the export of raw cotton will be stopped. We intend to proceed to the complete processing of cotton fiber in our country,” said an official of the ministry.
