Uzbekistan Railways has built a new Surkhanobod station in Surkhondaryo province on the border with Turkmenistan to increase the volume of transit traffic and for railcars maintenance and repair, the company said.

Previously, transit traffic in southern Uzbekistan was carried out through Boldir station in Turkmenistan. “Now, export-import cargo transportation operations will be serviced at the new station,” the company noted.

In March 2017, the leaders of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov opened two new bridges - the automobile and railway Turkmenabat - Farab across the Amu Darya River. Their operation, as well as discounts on rail transit of goods offered on a reciprocal basis, contributed to the growth of trade in goods and enhanced the transit capacity of the two countries.
