Uzbekistan plans to complete the new 500 kV Surkhon–Pol-i-Khumri transmission line construction project ahead of the schedule by December 2019, Uzbekenergo said.
A working group will be formed to speed the delivery of the project. Initially, the US$ 150 million (US$ 118 million to be contributed by Afghanistan) project was planned to be completed by the end of 2020.
Uzbekistan has already commenced the construction of the transmission line. The agreement on its construction was signed by the governments of the two countries during the visit of President Ashraf Ghani to Tashkent in December 2017.
A transmission line with a length of 260 km will increase the electricity supply from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan by 70% - up to 6 billion kWh per year.
